"A little coat"

O tender mother-love! We like to markHow the child Samuel served in deed and thought,Tending the glowing flame before the ark,Wearing the coat his mother's hands had wrought.

Trust

How little children, free from every qualmOf carking care, to happy rest time yield,Content with that day's joy, serenely calm;Nor strive to know their parents' thought will shieldAnd keep their children with unloosening hold;Enriched by ceaseless wealth of careful loveAnd sure providing, safe as in a foldThe lambs unheedful rest, or as the doveIn its wood nest secure! So clouds of fearHave never dimmed the child's sweet heaven of peace,Or stirred a dread he might become less dear,Nor roused a wondering thought if love could cease.

"Why weepest thou?"

It is a shattering thing to see our joy,Our fairest earthly hope, lie dashed and dead;To stand beside the sepulcher and weep,And feel the baffled weariness of grief.

Teach Me to Wait

Teach me to wait, dear Lord, and so restrainThe hasty wordThat only brings regret, and should remainUnthought, unheard.

Communion

As the chime of the golden bells,When Aaron entered the Holy of HoliesIn the ancient Hebrew tabernacle,O'er listening silence, purest melody—So is love divine within the heart.

Love's Plan

A rose unfolds its petals day by day,Its growth invisible to mortal eye;So opens out for us God's ordered way,Already settled, while we vainly tryTo plan our lives.

Witness

Witness of one eternal God,Children of constancy,Untouched by either time or spaceIn Mind's infinity.
As the dew at morning's dawningShall Thy Word distill,Giving hope and fresh endeavorTo obey Thy will.
