Dancing in sync with Him
I had an impromptu invitation to go dancing out of town that evening at The Broadmoor, a beautiful hotel in Colorado Springs. In my wildest Dancing with the Stars dreams, I couldn’t have conjured up a more perfect venue. We would be perched atop the city, with panoramic nighttime views from the intimate dance floor. Glitzy chandeliers would sparkle above us as a musical combo and singer serenaded us. And my dance partner for the evening was akin to Arthur Murray himself. Everything seemed perfect.
I had set aside a new purple dress, purchased months earlier with this dancing dream in mind. But I still had no shoes! In the small rural town where I lived, there were no shoe stores to be found. And specialized dance shoes, if they could be found, would surely blow my budget for the month.
I spent the morning of the dance as I usually do—studying the Christian Science Bible Lesson. Immersing myself in its spiritual uplift, I like to let the Bible Lesson direct my plan for the day. After a good study and prayer session, I often receive a strong intuition to call so-and-so, follow up on some forgotten project, go here, or go there. I call it “the dance of God’s angel messages.” I don’t always know why or where these ideas are leading, but I’m learning to trust and follow them.
That morning’s message directed me to take a too-large coat to the local consignment shop, and see if I could trade it in for a better-fitting one. When I arrived, I looked through all the coats, but could find nothing more suitable than my old one. Hmm. What else? Why had I come? I surveyed the shop. And there they were, just waiting for me—a pair of previously worn but like-new dancing shoes! Just one pair. Just the right purple. In just my size. A perfect fit at the perfect price point.
Are purple dance shoes too trivial for God? Does He know about our wardrobe or provide shopping services?
The way I understand it, God is perfect and includes only perfection. We reflect Him as our perfect source, and when we are spiritually tuned in and receptive, we naturally follow His leading. We learn to expect perfection and provision in our daily experience.
In the words of Christ Jesus: “And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: … Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? … Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:28, 30, 33 ).
Knowing this, we discover that no human need is left unattended by God. Perfection is never dependent on any material circumstance. Everyone can prove this, no matter how much money they have. It doesn’t come from retail diversity or our proximity to the mall. It’s not constrained by limits of time, and it’s not dependent on others.
Instead, perfection is revealed to us individually and directly as we see we are synchronized moment by moment with God, divine Mind. And this is true whether the need is for dancing shoes or for larger things such as a house, employment, an automobile, or funds to pay off a debt. God doesn’t distinguish between small and great needs. He knows only ever-present perfection, meeting every human need.
So I was grateful, but not altogether surprised, when those purple dancing shoes appeared for a waltz among the stars.
