Compassionate response
Like many people around the United States (and possibly even the world), by the end of the overly long political campaign season last year in the United States, I’d “had it.” When my phone rang for the umpteenth time (right at dinner time, of course) with yet another campaign call, I almost forgot that I am a lady and a student of Christian Science endeavoring to follow in the way of the Master, Christ Jesus!
Fortunately, I caught myself just in time to pray for a moment. Then I found myself saying to the individual calling, “If you are a volunteer, I commend you for donating your time like this to something you truly believe in. If you are getting paid a small fee, I understand. We all have bills to pay. I am asking you to please find a way to remove my name from your list. Your organization has already contacted me more than once. Please understand this is not personal.”
There was a brief pause. By the sound of her voice, I could tell the woman on the other end was close to tears. “Thank you for being so kind,” she said. “You cannot imagine some of the hurtful responses I’ve had tonight. And, yes, I can see to it that your name is removed from our calling list. Bless you.”
