In “Troubled Venezuela’s path to peaceThe Christian Science Monitor reports that “perhaps nowhere has legitimacy shifted so swiftly in a country than in Venezuela over the past year. In recent days, signs of this change have been on view for the world to witness, offering lessons in how a nation struggles to renew its social contract and its popular sovereignty.… Under Maduro, the basic qualities of governance have eroded, caused by his misrule as well as a drop in world oil prices since 2014.… A government’s legitimacy to rule is based not on brute force or free handouts. It relies on a leader’s relationship to the people’s noblest ideals. Those are often gauged by elections, polls, or protests. But they lie in the hearts of individual citizens, who are free to direct them to the most legitimate leaders.”

Ideas on this subject:

From the Bible:

O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.

Psalms 67:4

From the writings of Mary Baker Eddy:

Whatever enslaves man is opposed to the divine government. Truth makes man free.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 225

Truth, Life, and Love are the only legitimate and eternal demands on man, and they are spiritual lawgivers, enforcing obedience through divine statutes.

Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 184

Related articles from The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel:

In “True government is divine”: “We need to recognize and to acknowledge God’s government to be the only government. As we do this we are aiding in bringing out in our own affairs and in the affairs of men a higher expression of government, an expression which will more nearly pattern the divine.” And “We must resist the temptation to make a reality out of the abuses of man-made governments and to accept corruption, incompetency, injustice, personal favoritism of individuals or groups, and the other phases of error as any part of true government. Rather must we as Christian Scientists utilize our spiritual understanding of true government to nullify and to destroy these human misconceptions of government, that through the spiritually mental process of denying these lies concerning government and recognizing the truth concerning God’s righteous government we shall be doing our part to aid in the ejection of error and to bring out a higher expression of government.”

In “Governed by divine Principle”: “Christian Science proclaims God’s allness, His omnipotence and omnipresence. He is the only power and the only presence. Accordingly, we may logically conclude that His law governs the universe, the universe of His creating; and God’s law is God’s will. Hence the government of the universe is the law of God, the rule of divine Principle, the manifestation of God’s will. And this government must, because of its divine source, be just, righteous, infallible, and continuous.” And “Through righteous prayer, this scientific unity which exists eternally between God and man may be made practical in our human affairs to bless and prosper all. By its means, righteous government, the government of divine Principle, may be established.”
