I am deeply grateful for all the blessings which I have received through the study of Christian Science and particularly for the healing of the smoking habit. For many years I was a heavy smoker. After attending a Church of Christ, Scientist, for quite a while, I had a great desire to become a member, but I knew that I must first overcome smoking. I had tried on more than one occasion to do this by human will, but without success.

One Sunday morning while at church listening to the reading of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, the subject of which was "Ancient and Modern Necromancy, alias Mesmerism and Hypnotism, Denounced," I felt as though these words were meant especially for me (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 454): "It need not be added that the use of tobacco or intoxicating drinks is not in harmony with Christian Science." This statement made such a profound impression on me that I have never smoked since, nor have I had the slightest desire to do so. This healing occurred more than twenty years ago.

During the Second World War, I experienced wonderful protection through the study of the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation (ibid., pp.16, 17) and the ninety-first Psalm. One night I was in a train which had to stop and wait on a bridge for the signals. As I was repeating the Lord's Prayer to myself in the complete darkness, a number of German planes began to drop flares around us. I immediately thought of the ninety-first Psalm and gained an immediate sense of peace and freedom from fear. The planes flew on without dropping any bombs, and we continued on our way safely.
