"Blessed be the Lord, who daily...

"Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation" (Ps. 68:19). Soon after Christian Science was brought to my attention more than forty years ago the aftereffects of pleurisy were completely healed, I was the only student of Christian Science in our family of five, but the slight understanding I had of it was sufficient to overcome many ailments and troubles. In some cases, when one of our children was ill and my husband wished to have a doctor's verdict, harmony was restored before the doctor had time even to arrive.

During World War II, when our country was occupied, God's love and protection were proved to us over and over again. I should like to mention one outstanding case. Our family was evacuated, but two of the children continued working in our capital city. One morning our daughter telephoned me that her fiancé and our eldest son had suddenly disappeared the night before. There had been a fight on one of the streets, and the hat of one of the young men was later found near that place. She concluded her tale by saying, "And nobody knows where they are." I repeatedly said to myself: "Stand your ground; stand your ground." Then it was as if I heard a voice that said distinctly, "God knows where they are."

After giving my daughter some comforting statements I immediately took our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and started to read on page 227, where we are told: "God made man free. Paul said, 'I was free born.'" I realized that God's law of freedom is operating uninterruptedly, and I found many helpful passages in Science and Health which made me take a firmer stand against intruding mortal mind suggestions. The seriousness of the situation was recognized, for many of our brave men and women in those days were captured and imprisoned; some were taken out of our country and never returned.
