Goodbye flu season

When I was in high school, I would get hit with the flu each year during a certain season. I was grateful that I’d been attending Christian Science Sunday School and knew how to pray whenever this came up. I’d learned that God is divine Love, and I knew that, of course, Love would never allow me to suffer. Each time, as I prayed and felt more of Love’s care for me, I was quickly free from all symptoms.

Then one year something dawned on me: I didn’t have to keep suffering through one flu season after another. Instead, I could refuse to accept two fundamental, aggressive suggestions underlying this issue: First, that disease exists. And second, that it could have a cycle or a season, or even a beginning and an ending.

I didn’t have to keep suffering through one flu season after another.

I’d learned that the Bible says God made everything and made it very good. And this meant that since disease is not good, God could never have made it. God never creates anything harmful. And since disease has no beginning, it also can’t recur or have a cycle—so it couldn’t have any power or presence in my life.

I also prayed with a hymn from the Christian Science Hymnal. It reads,

In atmosphere of Love divine,
We live, and move, and breathe;
Though mortal eyes may see it not,
’Tis sense that would deceive.
.   .   .   .   .   .   .

For God, immortal Principle,
Is with us everywhere;
He holds us perfect in His love,
And we His image bear.
(Hymn No. 144, adaptation © CSBD)

Principle is law. So I affirmed in my prayers that since we are governed by God’s spiritual law of perfection and harmony, we can’t sometimes be governed by something else calling itself a material law of contagion or disease. God’s law is always in operation; it doesn’t come and go. And it is a law we can rely on to maintain us in perfect health continuously, without interruption. This law of Spirit, God, is supreme, absolute, so it can’t be overruled by anything.

Guess what? I never suffered from the flu again after that, and that was decades ago! And since then, I’ve been grateful to be able to lean on this experience in my prayers for the world, whenever issues of contagion or cycles of illness come up in the news.

God’s law is always in operation. And it is a law we can rely on to maintain us in perfect health, without interruption.

What a powerful healing law we all have to protect and maintain us—whatever the season.
