‘She was threatening to jump’
One sunny Saturday afternoon, my friend and I decided to take a shopping trip. As we were driving along a large bridge, she noticed a car parked on the shoulder with its emergency lights flashing, and soon we saw a woman climbing over the concrete wall of the bridge. It seemed like she was planning to jump off. We pulled over, and I got out of my car to catch the woman’s attention.
I waved to her and asked if she would come over to talk with me. She was very distressed and emotional, and was threatening to jump off if I came any closer. Fear overwhelmed me, and I asked my friend to call 911. While she was calling the emergency services, I called a Christian Science practitioner. I wanted to know more clearly that God’s love was present, and that this woman could feel it.
This woman could never be separated from God’s protection—not even for a second.
In a panic, I explained the situation to the practitioner. “Katiana,” she replied calmly, “this woman could never jump out of God’s love.” I’d been so overwhelmed by what was going on, but those words woke me up. Even though things seemed very dire, I could see the spiritual truth of the situation: Because God is All, and because we are each a beloved child of God, made in God’s likeness, this woman could never be separated from God’s protection—not even for a second. No matter how out of control things seemed, God was actually in complete control, because He is all power. No matter how chaotic things seemed, God’s all-presence was palpable to each of us. This woman was His cherished child, surrounded by divine Love at every moment.
While these statements of spiritual truth might seem hard to believe given the circumstances, I knew from other healings I’ve had that trusting these ideas and holding on to them, even in the face of frightening events, was the best way I could be of help to this woman. Instead of reacting out of fear, and feeling that God seemed far away, I realized that God is always with us and that I could listen to what God was telling me about His presence, care, love, and power. As I prayed with these ideas and affirmed to myself that they were true for this woman, I began to feel a sense of calm and complete trust in God’s allness.
The whole time I was on the phone, the woman had been standing on the edge of the bridge, looking down at the water. But shortly after I hung up with the practitioner, the woman moved away from the edge and climbed back over the wall to safety. By that time, the police had arrived and took the woman in for evaluation.
The woman moved away from the edge and climbed back over the wall to safety.
I was so filled with gratitude and joy for the woman’s safety, for what I had glimpsed of God’s protecting power, and for being exactly where we needed to be to witness that power. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need” (p. 494). I saw so clearly that day how God is ever present to meet every one of our needs, no matter how big or small they seem.
Around the time of this experience, I was feeling pretty disconnected from God and was having a hard time feeling His presence and love. This healing is such a tangible reminder to me that God’s love truly is ever present. I think back to this experience frequently when I need to feel that for myself. It is so comforting knowing that God is not only there for us in “serious” situations, but in each and every moment. Since that day, I’ve been practicing feeling His love in everything I do, whether I’m standing in line at the grocery store, walking to work, or being called on to help someone—as we were that sunny Saturday afternoon.
