No separation

Have you ever arrived at work one day to find a seemingly overwhelming task or series of tasks has been added to your workload?

At times when this has happened to me, I’ve thought of the words of Jesus, the exemplar of God’s love for humanity: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). That’s a compassionate invitation to rely on the body of work he gave us proving God’s power and love for all. He demonstrated the nothingness of fear, lack, hatred, and supposed difficulty. Think of Jesus’ to-do list! He wasn’t just showing off when he turned water into wine, calmed a storm, walked on water, fed thousands with a few loaves and fishes, forgave sinners, healed the sick, cleansed lepers, and cast out demons. He even had to raise the dead! Those assignments were on God’s to-do list for him, but Jesus was prepared and empowered to prove to humankind that “with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

Mary Baker Eddy recognized this fact. She wrote that Jesus “did life’s work aright not only in justice to himself, but in mercy to mortals,—to show them how to do theirs, but not to do it for them nor to relieve them of a single responsibility” (Science and Health, p. 18). Jesus’ work is our template for living a life overflowing with love, and for witnessing the joy and healing that result.
