Afraid of the sun? Apply prayer!

Have you noticed how much news coverage has been given to the sun lately? Even so early in the summer (in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway) there are stories about expected heat waves, causing widespread fears about adequate sun protection. Combine that with increased media attention about the importance of sunscreen to protect one’s skin, and you have a very hot topic!

Last summer I wondered, “What can I do to combat fear about the sun?” I decided to turn to prayer. I’ve found that prayer can and does calm fears about the sun, replacing them with the confident assurance that God is in control.

There are thousands of sprays, lotions, oils, clothing, and masks designed to protect us from harmful rays from the sun. I noticed that the marketing campaigns for these products often promote all kinds of fears—of chemicals, of oiliness/dryness, of not enough protection, and of too much protection—just to name a few. Just a simple Amazon.com search for “sunscreen” brings up 18,551 results, and there are now SPF 100+ sunscreens on the market.
