Bible Notes: God

Hebrew: Psalm 46:7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.

The two verses selected for this week are reflections of the tradition that is recorded in Ex. 3:11-15, a conversation between God and Moses about who he is, and who the LORD is. When Moses asked, “Who am I to go to Pharoah and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” the answer was simply, “I am with you”.Ex. 3:11,12 translating with English present instead of English future. Indeed, as the story goes on, the power of God working with Moses brought Israel out of Egypt. Psalm 46 is an exalted proclamation of this transcendent and invincible power of God, and its reassurance comes to the people as a whole. Moreover, this later author also has linked the Mosaic name to the cosmic creation in Gen. 2:1, “the heavens and earth were finished and all their hosts.” The Hebrew word hosts can be translated armies, but because the Psalm is about the LORD’s transcendent control over nature, it is more likely a sentence name such as He creates hosts.

Greek: Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith theLord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
