An angry stranger: disarmed

I was on the phone when a man entered the Christian Science Reading Room, where I was serving at the time. The person on the phone was inquiring about Christian Science, and I was sharing some of the simple truths that had helped me.

Suddenly, as I hung up the phone and turned around at the desk, I realized the man was now standing directly in front of me, with a raised bat in his arms. He appeared ready to swing it in the direction of my head. At first, I struggled with an intense sense of fear, before realizing I must trust God completely, both for myself and for the well-being of this man.

So relying on God’s wisdom to guide me, I looked the man in the eyes, smiled warmly at him, and asked, “Can I help you?”
