The open channels of infinite Love

Several years ago we were in the grip of another water shortage and low rainfall. The River Eden, which runs past the mill house near where my in-laws lived had a very low level of water and parts of the river were dry. We hadn’t had rain for a long time and drought had set in. Everybody was praying for rain, and it was natural for me to pray also.

I thought of the many examples in the Bible of God’s provision of water. These show the nature and character of God’s love for His creation. Take, for instance, the time when the children of Israel needed water on the journey to the Promised Land. There in the desert, Moses cried to God for help and was inspired to strike a rock with his staff. Water poured from it, and this met the needs of the people. A God who is all love wouldn’t leave them to perish for lack of water.

On another occasion, Jesus—tired, thirsty, and hungry from his journey—sat by Jacob’s well waiting for his disciples, who had gone into the city to buy food. A Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well. In his conversation with her, he told the woman about “the living water” that came from understanding God.
