"SILOAM."

"Go wash!" That loving gentle presence leave, which wokeThe only hope he e'er had known—whose actions spokeOf power and peace, whose every tone made his heart yearnTo worship God in purity, from earth to turnTo heaven! His life had known no law—he turned away,In unfamiliar stillness, to wash and to obey! The strange new sense of partial sight perplexed him sore;Lost was his certainty of touch, he knew no moreHow gropingly his way to find—the past to himWas dead, the present vague and filled with shadows dim.

LOVE'S RECOMPENSE

Think not, faint heart, that thou canst lackThy heritage of love,Since God Himself thy portion is,Who giveth every child of HisFull measure from above.

MY BROKEN IDOL

My days and nights to evil thoughts were closed;I prayed to God aright, as I supposed; As porter at my humble door I stoodThat naught should find an entrance there but good.

THE MASTER'S CALL

Into a desert place come ye apart,The loving Master said, and rest awhile; For earthly hopes and joys have claimed thy heartAnd human ways and means thy thoughts beguile.

THE CALL

Awake! awake, my heart, and live! How canst thou sleep?

THE WATERFALL

My song among the hills I sing forever,My liquid lute I pipe the livelong day,In melancholy mood or glad endeavor,A doleful dirge or rhythmic roundelay.

The demand for church

I like to think of each church that grows up in a community as that community's answered prayer for the presence of the saving Christ—the message of God's love for humanity.

LISTENING

What, oh, what does Love impart?

LOVE

In error's darkness, not a ray of light;I stumbled on and knew not where to go,While phantom forms of fear's unholy showPursued and harassed me upon my flight:Thou, Love, wast there, and not with earthly mightDestroyed these terrors—bade me stop and knowThyself and Thine.

THOUGHT

Nothing but thought can scale the stars,Though bird-men hover high,To ravel the riddle why ruddy MarsShould flare like a great red eye.

FIAT LUX

The eyes of new-born babe, first opening,See not the world, the forms of man and beast,Distinguish not the distances, but bringOne thought by which the new life is increased;"Let there be light,"And on that light the eyes rejoicing feast.

A BENEDICTION

Give to God His crowning glory,Love tells thee how.

THE READING-ROOM

It is the chamber o'er the city gate,The watch-tower, whence the tidings of good cheerOr earnest warnings sound, for those who hearThe call of Truth, and for its coming wait.
