JOY

Joy ! What is joy?

WITH THEE

One moment, Lord, with Thee—And I am whole! To cast out self and all my sin efface,To come so near Thee that I see Thy faceAnd feel the breath of Life and calm embraceOf Love's control.

TRUTH'S SEAMLESS GARMENT

Why divide the seamless garment,Worn by one who, long ago,When on earth with simple grandeurBanished sin and want and woe?

UNFAILING LIGHT

Out in the west I'd watched the red sun setting,And fancied day was dying—light had fled.

OMNIPOTENCE

Thou mayest not, perchance, a mount remove,Or change the crystal water into wine,—The dead restore, or heal through power divineThe multitude that seek this power to prove:Yet think ye not such marvelous works behooveA favored mortal or predestined line;Nor, scoffing, give no credence till a signThy faith awaken and thy doubt reprove.

THE ETERNAL NOW

Life knows no past.

FAITH

Faith scatters abroad in the fall its grain,Covering it over with tender care;Nor fears, though with north winds and hurrying snowFierce winter stalks forth from its icy lair.

NO MORE SEA

The sea ever speaks with its billows,Of restlessness, tumult, and strife; And mysteries vast and unfathomed,O'erclouding the sunshine of life.

ENVISIONED

Have you seen the vision?

LOWLINESS

The happy primrose breathed a thought of gratitude to God—Her prayer of grace, in sweet perfume, arose above the sod:In looking up to Him, she said, Because I lie so low,My sight includes all other flowers which high above me grow—How beautiful, that I can always see my dear friends so!The Master bade his followers take the lowest seat;He surely knew the rest, the calm—that consciousness so sweetWhich is itself the summons, Friend, up higher come! No prideDisturbs the thought that quiet serves, and seeks for naught beside; The bread, the wine, in tender love are up the table pressed; The loving heart, upturned to God, welcomes His every guest.

"CAPTIVITY CAPTIVE"

O wondrous harmony! Where every thought—That subtle, inner thing we cannot see—A willing captive unto Christ is broughtAnd merged in God's immensity,And thus, through broader use finds wider scopeIn fields of richness, where it roameth free;Borne up and on by one unending hope,—Still to unfold in all eternity!
