Inspiration

At eventide I'm thinking of that night long years agoWhen wondering shepherds watched their flocks and saw avision glow; And e'en to me their vision comes—a glorious angel throng; My heart o'erflows with gladness, I hear the rapturous song; And as I listen, rapt before the Truth, the Life, the Love, the light,There surely now is born to me a Saviour dear tonight!

Eventide

Weary of trying to soar,Weary of flying and falling,Nestlings are coming once moreHome to the mother-love's calling.

Contentment

To look upon the world with smiling eyes,To view my lot with joy, whate'er it seem,To know the truth, with all that this implies,To live, to act, not sit and idly dream:To envy none, to long for naught save thingsAbove the mortal, that shall satisfy,—Thus knows my heart the song contentment sings,And discontent shall pass unnoticed by.

Only a Dream

Adam slept, and dreamed that space, all vocal with joy and song,Took form as birds that peopled the air and silenced the serpent of wrong.

Humility

When Andrew found the Christ, so long ago,He went to where his brother, on the sand,Mended the nets, and, Come with me, he said,A wondrous thing hath happened! Hand in handThey hurried back until they reached the placeWhere Jesus sat.

Love's Bounty

This is the feast of Love, to knowThe Father's bounty all doth feed; That peace and joy forever flow,All unconfined by doubt or creed.

The Christ-idea

Not only to a fewLone shepherds of the fieldThe night with glory shone,The heavenly anthem pealed; Not only to one ageThat peace on earth, good will; Not only to one raceWas Christ born to fulfil.

Desire

If God we could but understandInstead of just believe,And take from out Love's proffered hand,What gems we might receive!

Eventide

The fading glow of roseate lightStill lingers in the distant west;It touches gently haze–clad hillsAnd glimmers from their opaled crest.
The little cares that fretted me,I lost them yesterdayAmong the fields above the sea,Among the winds at play,Among the lowing of the herds,The rustling of the trees,Among the singing of the birds,The humming of the bees; The foolish fears of what might come,I cast them all awayAmong the clover-scented grass,Among the new-mown hay,Among the hushing of the cornWhere drowsy poppies nod,Where ill thoughts die and good are born,Out in the fields with God.
