Summer Rain

Oh , the smell of summer rainAs it patters down the dust! And, oh, the thoughts that come againOf verdant hope and vanquished pain,Like fragrance rising from earth's crust,Subdued and wet by summer rain!Who could cherish doubt and fear,When through lattice pink and whiteOf blossoming trees, blue skies appear?

Arising at Dawn

A little burden traveled through the air,And as it flew from troubled heart to heart,It grew and magnified each little careWhich mortal thought had made of it a part.

How beautiful the feet of thoseWho on the mount of holy praiseHave walked above the vale of woes,To aid the toiler on his ways!—Not on the mount of holy lightTo live alone in calm repose,But ever lifting into sightThe blind, who in a vale of woesAre striving to attain the height,And wrestling with their phantom foes.

"Songs in the night"

A song may sing its simple wayWhere sermons fail to reach;A song sometimes the heart may stayWhen prophets vainly preach.

The Pine

Commanding and rugged rises the sturdy shaft of the pinetree.

Awakening!

How harsh the din of worldly strife! How grievous mortal hate and fear! But'mid the tumult, calm and clear,A voice awakes to holier life.

"In quiet resting-places"

Within Thy gentle solitudes,O Love, I come and wait and rest,Knowing Thy pure beatitudesWill well reward my weary quest.

Truth's Ministry

I sowed a little plot of life with weeds,Nor ever dreamed that they would bring me sorrow,But fateful winds arose and blew their seedsFar out across the fields of my tomorrow.

In the Mountains

I heard a lonely shepherd wind his hornUpon the stillness of an alpine morn,And heavenly fantasies from rock and dellPoured down in echoes to his humble cell,As though upon some organ strange and fairA seraph played, in the pure upper air.
