Listening to God
One of the wonderful things I’ve learned from studying Christian Science is that we can pray anywhere, anytime, about anything. Christian Science has also taught me that prayer is less about asking God to listen to us and more about us listening to God. It isn’t telling God our problems or wishing them away but being receptive and allowing the Christ, Truth, to fill our consciousness with angels, God’s thoughts. These pure thoughts remind us of God’s goodness and supremacy and the reality of our present perfection as the sons and daughters of this totally good God.
I had an opportunity recently to practice this active prayer. I was out to dinner with a group when I suddenly felt very ill. My stomach was extremely uncomfortable. While I felt I didn’t want to draw attention to myself by leaving the table, I knew that I could pray right where I was.
As I prayed silently by listening to God, this is what came to thought: Nothing can get in the way of God’s law. Nothing can come between God and me. There is nothing that can interrupt, obstruct, stifle, limit, or cut off God’s law in my life. Because God’s law is the only law, it is the law of my life. And because the law of God is only good, I have nothing to be afraid of but everything to enjoy.
