The “changing glow” that brings progress
The teachings of Christ Jesus impel us to move past comfortable customs to grow in our understanding of God and His expression.
One of the more spectacular phenomena in nature is the aurora borealis—the northern lights—seen in the lower polar regions of the northern hemisphere. Billions of tiny flashes fill the sky with colorful light that produces breathtaking displays that are perpetually new.
It would be disappointing to travel the distance required to see the northern lights if they were the same each day. Similarly, wouldn’t it be disappointing if, despite fresh inspiration from our prayers, our thought and experience remained the same as the day before? Mary Baker Eddy explains in the textbook on Christian Science, “The changing glow and full effulgence of God’s infinite ideas, images, mark the periods of progress” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 511).
Wow—the changing glow of God’s ideas is related to progress. It would follow, then, that as we look for and value this glow in our understanding of God and His creation, we will be more likely, and ready, to experience progress in our lives.
