Prayer dissolves skin growth

In 2020, a small growth appeared on one of my arms, eventually spreading into a patch of discoloration on my skin.

To seek healing for this, I turned to Christian Science—the laws of healing practiced by Christ Jesus. This spiritual understanding of divine law assures us that disease is not a reality created by God but an illusion produced by false belief—an error of thought. The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, says: “Discord is the nothingness named error. Harmony is the somethingness named Truth” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 276).

Previously, through wholehearted reliance on Christian Science, I had experienced healings of numerous physical problems, such as deafness in one ear, a sprained ankle, flu, and a persistent cough, to name a few. So I was confident that I could pray to find healing of this condition as well. I began metaphysical treatment through prayer along with study of the Bible and Science and Health, certain that the divine law of harmony would prevail.

My starting point was obeying this statement in Science and Health: “Christian scientific practice begins with Christ’s keynote of harmony, ‘Be not afraid!’ ” (p. 410). I had learned through my study of the textbook that God, divine Spirit, is supreme over all and is omnipresent and omni-active good. Regardless of the testimony of the physical senses, God’s creation is entirely good, too, and is spiritual, not a mix of matter and Spirit. The provable fact is that Spirit’s idea or likeness—the true identity of everyone—is spiritual and therefore forever alive and healthy, not stuck in an ailing mortal body.

I began praying by affirming that the only cause is God, who never causes discord or disease. Science and Health counsels us to be steadfast, even if healing doesn’t come right away: “Stick to the truth of being in contradistinction to the error that life, substance, or intelligence can be in matter. Plead with an honest conviction of truth and a clear perception of the unchanging, unerring, and certain effect of divine Science. Then, if your fidelity is half equal to the truth of your plea, you will heal the sick” (p. 418).

That is what I did over the course of several weeks. Because showering included touching the affected area, I began praying before doing so. Keeping my thought on the spiritual fact of God’s allness and goodness, I became less and less impressed by the physical appearance.

Then one day the conviction came to me that I had never been touched by this lie of disease. Like a veil, the sense testimony had seemed to conceal the health and perfection that were always mine as a beloved child of God. I saw past the veil to the truth of my wholly spiritual and pure individuality. Within a day or two, the discoloration vanished, along with the growth. That was over two years ago, and my skin has remained clear.

Sticking to the fact that harmony is real and discord is unreal brings proof that health is always present and uninterrupted. It’s God’s law!
