Probation After Death
Thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; . . . And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: . . . And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
In this chapter, Isaiah rebukes Israel for seeking an alliance with Egypt against Assyria instead of trusting in God (see vv. 1–3). The prophet reminds the people that deliverance comes from “returning and rest”—from confidently turning back to Him.
“The Holy One of Israel” as a name for God occurs nearly thirty times in the book of Isaiah, much more often than in the rest of the Hebrew Bible. The writer depicts the God of Israel as the one God, whose covenant relationship with His nation provides divine guidance and ensures its salvation.
