Heart trouble healed

In 2017 I began experiencing health problems that made me fearful. I tried to refute the thoughts coming to me about disease, knowing they weren’t from God, but instead got caught up in attempting to diagnose the problem. This began in early November, and by the middle of December, there were more aggressive symptoms that led me to believe I had a heart condition.

Although I have had several significant healings over the years through Christian Science, the fear of the symptoms began to overwhelm me. I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray with me. He gave me Christian Science treatment, which helped allay my fear, and shared this statement from Psalms: “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord” (31:24). This gave me comfort and hope.

Although the symptoms were sometimes aggressive, I was able to go about most normal activities. When the fear was great, I was reminded of this beautiful promise from First John: “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear” (4:18). It offers such assurance that God’s love is greater than any problem. I can see now that this great fact of being was operating in my thought even as the battle with fear continued.

I had planned a trip in January to support a family member in another city. I decided to go, and the firm stand of the practitioner, who continued to support me with Christian Science treatment, was a tremendous help.

One night during this trip, the symptoms were particularly difficult. I was on the phone with the practitioner more than once in the night, but by morning was able to go ahead with plans for the day. The ensuing weeks were challenging, but looking back, I can see that I was learning the great value of persistence.

I am so grateful for the help of the practitioner, who exhibited loving compassion coupled with an ability to firmly rouse my thought when I needed it, which was often. I remember one morning when I called for help very early, feeling quite frightened. The practitioner asked, “Are you standing up?” I said, “No, I’m in bed.” He said, “Stand up!” I did so, put on a coat, and began walking outside while we talked. After a little while, he said something that made me laugh. Though not the end of the problem, this was a very important step. It helped break the hold of fear.

I took another important step one evening while studying Unity of Good by Mary Baker Eddy. In an essay called “Seedtime and Harvest,” the author addresses the question, “Is anything real of which the physical senses are cognizant?” She gives a very direct answer: “Everything is as real as you make it, and no more so. What you see, hear, feel, is a mode of consciousness, and can have no other reality than the sense you entertain of it” (p. 8).

This was one of those lightbulb moments. The direct nature of those words struck a chord with me, and I got a glimpse of the truth of that statement. The completely mental nature of the problem became clearer. Within minutes the symptoms disappeared, and I felt fine. Though the healing was not yet complete, this was a clear turning point in the process of seeing and claiming my spiritual dominion.

I continued to work with the practitioner. Not long after this, my husband and I were invited to an event in the evening. Halfway through the night, I realized I felt completely free and at ease. That was the end of the difficulty, and the symptoms of heart trouble have never returned.

I cannot express enough gratitude for this healing and for the continual reminder of the power of Truth and the nothingness of matter.
