There’s something I ask myself daily
Am I more or less comfortable on earth’s seesaw
well one day and sick the next
solvent yesterday and overdrawn today
a bit slower and stiffer than last year?
Or am I striving for the Life that’s simpler, holier
free from doom and disorder
heaped with hope and harmony
shining forth with love, bliss, and purpose?
Every moment I have a choice
self-gratification or self-abnegation
independence or obedience
my way or the Christ-way?
The instant I let go of my will
and embrace only God’s,
my feeble self-justifications and excuses
melt away in the radiancy of Love,
supplanted by indescribable joy and freedom.
Today is a fresh start, the perfect time
to let the Christ, Truth, lead me out of yesterday’s
fears and suspicions
hardness and indifference
complications and entanglements . . .
indeed, to “put off the old man with his deeds”Colossians 3:9
and thankfully, cheerfully, simply
be the man that God has made.
