From heredity to heritage

I needed to understand that I am and always have been purely spiritual, immortal, and free.

For some time, I had been praying about my health. One day, I said earnestly, “OK, God, please show me what I need to know.” Suddenly, these words came to me: “Loose them, and let them go.” This spiritual message echoes the Bible story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead (see John 11:1–44). When I pondered the meaning of this, I realized I had been thinking about heredity. I had been praying with and studying many wonderful truths about my spiritual origin and relation to God, Spirit, but in that moment it was uncovered that I was believing that I was susceptible to the same maladies my family members had suffered from.

That’s when the light dawned. I really wanted to pray from the standpoint of my present perfection and wholeness, as the Christian Science textbook explains: “The Christlike understanding of scientific being and divine healing includes a perfect Principle and idea,—perfect God and perfect man,—as the basis of thought and demonstration” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 259). In reality, disease and mortality are false beliefs of birth, life, and death in matter, and none of these had ever truly touched me or my family. I needed to “loose” the matter-based view and understand that man is and always has been purely spiritual, immortal, and free—infinitely expressing the health, holiness, and harmony of Spirit and never separated from God, the one ever-present Life.

God, Spirit, is our only Parent, our Father-Mother.
