My family and I have experienced countless healings over many years. These healings—of physical, mental, financial, relational, and other issues—came through reliance on God. In some cases, in addition to my own heartfelt prayers, Christian Science practitioners provided metaphysical treatment. 

One very significant healing was of a months-long challenge with stomach and intestinal issues that would cause severe pain for a day or two at a time. I had sometimes prayed with different Christian Science practitioners about this. 

One evening when I felt the condition coming on, I picked up Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and prayed, “God, You opened the door of Christian Science to me, and I know I wasn’t brought to Science, only to suffer these terrible attacks. What do I need to know?” I turned to some pages I thought might be helpful in the chapter “Christian Science Practice,” and one passage jumped off the page. I wanted and needed to grasp the essence of these words: “Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God’s government. Have no fear that matter can ache, swell, and be inflamed as the result of a law of any kind, when it is self-evident that matter can have no pain nor inflammation. Your body would suffer no more from tension or wounds than the trunk of a tree which you gash or the electric wire which you stretch, were it not for mortal mind” (p. 393).
