A few years ago, I had an experience in which spiritual light drew me out of darkness and brought about a physical healing.
One afternoon while visiting an animal sanctuary in a nearby town with a fellow Christian Scientist, I suddenly began to feel unwell. Soon after, I lost consciousness. When I awoke, I was surrounded by EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians), who had been called in. They offered to take me to the emergency room to have everything checked out. I thanked them for their kindness and care but declined the offer and assured them that my friend would deliver me safely home.
Later, at home, still feeling unsettled from the earlier episode, I began to experience an internal pain that was very frightening. I called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. Because of the pain, I was unable to sleep, so I sat in a chair through the night, in quiet stillness and willingness to receive the tender and comforting care of my Father-Mother God. There was nothing I wanted more than the spiritual light that Christian Science brings and that Christ Jesus demonstrated so perfectly.
The comfort did come, and it came tenderly. It became clear to me that the law of God was operating on my behalf to bring about healing. A growing confidence in God’s care began to still the fear, and the internal suffering gradually eased until it disappeared.
I feel that in my willingness to be healed I had consented to the one powerful Life, God, that the light of Christ, Truth, was revealing. This spiritual light drew me out of a sense of being imprisoned in a physical body of pain. It gently encouraged me until I felt well. It had taken place much like a hint of pink dawning in the eastern sky on a clear morning and growing until the sky fills with a glorious spectrum of color.
Today I rejoice with these words from the Christian Science textbook: “ ‘Let there be light,’ is the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and discord into the music of the spheres” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 255).
I am so grateful for this complete and permanent healing and for the spiritual light that shines forth in uncontested brilliance. It touches our prayers for healing and understanding and fills our yearning hearts, so that we may shine forth, reflecting Love’s fullness. And we bear witness to God’s healing activity, which shines throughout the world.
