Selfless prayer helps and heals

My wife came home one day with the news that many people at her work had recently tested positive for COVID-19. My workplace, a school, was experiencing the same thing. Many students and teachers were absent. There was fear and worry that everyone was increasingly vulnerable because of new variants of the virus.

At this point, I stepped up my prayers in response to the global pandemic. I turned more devotedly to God, divine Love, in prayer and was more conscious of sheltering my thoughts from fear. The topic of disease was everywhere. I was aware of the extent of the issue, so muting discouraging or antagonistic chatter on TV or online was part of my prayerful effort to stay awake to God’s enduring care. I also felt that my prayers were proactively addressing the common belief that we were all doomed to suffer.

Then, one evening, I felt terrible. I had the same symptoms that the news had been reporting. I continued to pray, knowing that there is only one Truth, one Life: God, good. Being obedient to my school’s policies, I called the principal and was advised to take a COVID test. I tested positive for the virus, so the principal asked that I stay out of school for ten days. Not for one instant did I feel that prayer had let me down. Having had many healings through Christian Science, I absolutely knew that God was caring for me right at that moment; I didn’t have to be afraid. I continued to turn totally to God in prayer. I knew that a test and its results did not define my health or my true being as God’s child.
