Trust in God results in harmonious home birth

When I was pregnant with my fourth child, I decided to work with a midwife and have the baby at home. I had attempted a home birth with my first child but ended up at the hospital (for the first time in my life), and the doctors insisted that I have a C-section. So for the next two children, I found a doctor and had both at the hospital. Those births were natural and much more harmonious than the first, but the experience, as would be expected, was very medical, and this was hard for me as a practicing Christian Scientist.

When my mom first suggested that I consider having the fourth baby at home, I said, “No way.” However, as I continued to listen and pray in support of the child, my thought changed. This time I really wanted to get beyond a material sense of birth and further demonstrate my God-given, spiritual dominion. I came to the conclusion that the most helpful atmosphere for this would be outside of the hospital. I found a midwife to assist me during the birth, and I also asked a Christian Science nurse to be present during the birth and to assist me right afterward.

I decided I wouldn’t take any tests that weren’t required by law or didn’t seem necessary under the circumstances, but I did concede to the midwife’s request that I do a simple finger prick to test for iron in my blood. This test concluded that my iron was low. I didn’t give it too much thought at the time, since this was early on in my pregnancy.
