Faithful service

Military service, whether in combat with hostile forces or not, can be difficult. The training is designed to test even the toughest individuals. However, it does not need to be traumatic to people who serve their country in this way.

One idea that has inspired me, in both my military service and my practice of Christian Science, was written by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. She wrote in Christian Science versus Pantheism: “In your peaceful homes remember our brave soldiers, whether in camp or in battle. Oh, may their love of country, and their faithful service thereof, be unto them life-preservers!” (p. 14).

Remembering our brave soldiers is something I do often in my current work, and I find that the above passage has given consecration to my prayers for veterans. Faithful service to country has certainly been a life preserver in my own experience—and can also be so for others, because unselfish service springs from the power of God, divine Love, which renews faith, brings healing, and preserves lives.
