Eczema gone, free to serve
As a young child, I suffered severely from asthma, and when I was five, my family doctor told my mother he had done all he could for me. He told her to put the matter in God’s hands, and she did. She had been a medical nurse, but with one of her children near death, she decided to turn wholeheartedly to God for healing. She called a Christian Science practitioner for Christian Science treatment. I was healed of the asthma, and from then on my family and I attended a Church of Christ, Scientist, and the Christian Science Sunday School in a nearby city.
That was an important healing in my life, but not the last. When I was in junior high, my skin erupted with an unsightly rash. To return to school I was required to get a medical diagnosis to make sure the disease was not contagious. While the diagnosis allowed me to return to school, the condition was said to be eczema, and I was given different remedies, none of which seemed to work.
I stopped using the medical remedies, and since I was attending Christian Science Sunday School, I called the same practitioner who had treated me for asthma years earlier. He gave me Christian Science treatment and prayed for me, and through talking with him I learned how to better pray for myself. One Bible verse from Job was especially helpful: “For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear” (11:15). The healing took some time, but I continued to grow in my understanding of God’s love for me, and ultimately the eczema was gone.
