Incapacitating pain healed
I was fortunate to be able to attend a Christian Science camp in the Pocono Mountains for three years during my early teens. In addition to enjoying the friendships and the camp activities, one of my strongest memories is of the opportunity to work closely with passages from the weekly Christian Science Bible Lesson. Each week, campers in every cabin would choose some verses to learn and study, and then recite them out loud during an assembly of the entire camp.
From time to time over the years, those happy memories come into thought, and I’m filled with gratitude for having had that experience. One of the sentences, which I remember memorizing and which has stayed with me through the many years since those camp days, is from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. It states, “Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts” (p. 261).
Holding firmly to the fact that God is Spirit, and understanding that each of us reflects spiritual qualities, such as wholeness, as the image and likeness of God, brings practical proofs of these uplifting, scientific ideas into our daily lives. Although intrusive illusions about man as something other than spiritual and perfect may try to enter thinking, they aren’t the truth about God’s creation. There are many accounts in the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments, that prove the effectiveness of reliance on God.
