‘I have to have that book!’

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer” (Psalms 19:14).

My search for God began several decades ago. My siblings and I belonged to the Baptist church at the time, and I thought everyone was Baptist! I remember that the first song I learned in church was “Yes, Jesus loves me.”

Then at the early age of eighteen I got married. I was running away from many house rules only to find that there are more “rules,” so to speak, in married life. Like Jonah in the Bible, I was running from God, and, like Jonah, I felt swallowed up by a world that I felt I did not belong in. My first marriage ended in divorce.
