Christian Science as a ‘skilful surgeon’
In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy writes, “Christian Science is always the most skilful surgeon, but surgery is the branch of its healing which will be last acknowledged” (p. 402). Then she goes on to list several healings that took place through “mental surgery alone.”
I also experienced a healing, through scientific prayer, that proved to me that Christian Science is indeed “the most skilful surgeon.” During my freshman year in college, one morning after I got out of bed, I noticed I could not keep my balance. It seemed that the muscles of my lower back weren’t working right. I soon realized it was very difficult for me to stay seated for more than one hour at a time without pain.
Not being a student of Christian Science at that time, I consulted an orthopedist, who told me that I had two herniated discs. He prescribed an exercise regimen, along with rest, to ease the discomfort. But after doing the exercises prescribed by the orthopedist for more than six months, I did not notice any improvement in my condition; instead, it seemed to be worse.
