A child’s prayers answered

My first healing in Christian Science took place when I was seven and a half years old. It was spring, and my mom had asked me if I would like to spend part of the summer on my grandparents’ farm in Minnesota. We lived in Chicago, but I had visited Grandmother a few times with Mom and Dad and had enjoyed the calves, kittens, chickens, ducks, dogs, and horses. So I readily agreed.

I hadn’t realized I would be the only family member visiting our relatives. My dad took me to the train station and placed me on a train headed for Superior, Wisconsin, where my grandmother and aunts would meet me and take me to the farm. Back then, kids roamed around much more freely and were more often unaccompanied by adults, so my traveling alone on the train wasn’t considered unsafe.

While on the train trip, which was long, I knew God was with me, because of what I had learned in the Christian Science Sunday School I had attended since I was about five years old. I liked going to Sunday School because I learned there that “God is love” (I John 4:8) and that “there is no spot where God is not.” Those ideas kept me from being afraid of traveling alone on the train, and I visited with various riders in the coach while the conductor kept an eye on me.
