Being a witness for truth
When questioned by Pontius Pilate as to whether he was a king, Christ Jesus said, “To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth” (John 18:37).
As Jesus’ followers, as Christians, it follows that we also should bear witness to truth, to the highest degree we are able. One definition of witness reads: “To have direct cognizance of; to observe with one’s own eyes or ears.”
The truth that Jesus bore witness to was spiritual; that is, he saw beyond a limited human or material picture of things. He saw the truth of God’s almightiness; the true nature of God as infinite, omnipresent Spirit, as great, good, and perfect; the law of God’s harmonious governance of all creation; and the spiritual fact of man as God’s expression, or reflection, who therefore must also be good, perfect, and spiritual. For us to bear witness to this truth would surely be a noble life purpose. Such spiritual seeing is awesome!
