Why disease can be healed

Since the discovery of Christian Science by Mary Baker Eddy, there have been countless healings of disease through the practice of its teachings. Over the years, many of them have been recorded in this magazine and The Christian Science Journal, testified to in Wednesday night testimony meetings, or sometimes just quietly rejoiced over.

The question is, What causes these healings of disease? How is it that a seemingly physical discord can vanish through mental, spiritual means alone, leaving the one who was healed not only better physically but mentally, spiritually, and sometimes even morally?

The answer lies in the fact that the substance of disease is not matter but mortal mind, or material, human consciousness. Disease is literally a mistaken thought, objectifying itself as discord. Mrs. Eddy writes of this in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “When we remove disease by addressing the disturbed mind, giving no heed to the body, we prove that thought alone creates the suffering” (p. 400).
