Lifted out of addiction
Some years ago I found myself in a tough situation. I was hooked on marijuana and feeling guilty, sad, and lost. I realized that what I was doing was immoral and would not bring lasting satisfaction. I also knew from my study of Christian Science that God is the only true source of happiness, and that man, God’s spiritual idea, reflects only purity and goodness.
To regain my sense of worth and happiness, I saw that I must get back onto the path indicated by Jesus’ example. The Bible tells us that before taking the most difficult step of his career, the progressive step that God was pointing out to him, Jesus prayed humbly, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42). That was how I prayed—to yield to God’s will and let Him guide me forward.
Despite my shame and reluctance to talk about the addiction, my growing desire to be free of it eventually led me to call a Christian Science practitioner for metaphysical treatment. She didn’t judge me. Rather, she began to “pour in truth through flood-tides of Love,” which Mary Baker Eddy says is the way to remove error from mortal mind (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 201). I don’t remember everything we discussed or all the ideas I prayed with, but I do remember feeling so relieved and loved. I knew that reaching out for prayerful help was the right decision, and it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
