Nearer each day

When we are anticipating some happy event or pleasant occasion, we might note it on our calendar, and maybe even count the days as the time draws nearer. Perhaps the occasion requires preparation. As we prepare, our anticipation grows. Each day brings us closer to the much-awaited event.

Yet above and beyond anything a human circumstance or occasion could promise or provide are the joy and peace of becoming better acquainted with God—to feel His presence nearer. Mary Baker Eddy once wrote: “To-day my soul can only sing and soar. An increasing sense of God’s love, omnipresence, and omnipotence enfolds me. Each day I know Him nearer, love Him more, and humbly pray to serve Him better” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 174).

Perhaps we don’t always begin our day with a song in our heart. Maybe it’s because we dread what we think the hours ahead will demand of us, especially if we’re struggling with an illness, or a relationship or financial problem. However, many have found such occasions to be opportunities to feel more tangibly than ever before God’s nearness—to experience His ever-present love and tender care. For He is omnipresent, ready to answer every heartfelt prayer and meet every human need.
