The healing effect of the Ten Commandments
“Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments,” says Psalms 112:1. And, indeed, many of us learned the Ten Commandments early in our Sunday School years, and our lives have been enriched by our obedience to them.
But the Commandments are much more than basic rules for personal conduct. They have their authority in God, divine Principle, who governs all. Interpreted spiritually, the Commandments point to facts about the kingdom of heaven, the infinite realm that includes everything in God’s creation.
I had an experience many years ago that showed me how the Ten Commandments can guide our prayers about our community, with great healing effect. It was the week before school started. My son, who was a senior in high school, was looking forward to playing every football game that year. However, a few days before the first game, he was brought home after practice with what appeared to be a broken shoulder. We were told he could not play unless he had an X-ray that showed him to be free from the injury.
