No more pain or injury
Originally written in German, this testimony first appeared in the October 2013 German, French, Portuguese, and Spanish editions of The Herald of Christian Science.
Through my study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, I have learned that, as a child of God, I can never be separated from divine Love, God. To understand and experience this makes me deeply grateful.
One experience especially stands out for me. On a sunny day, our son’s field hockey team played a game against the parents. My husband and I did not have any previous experience playing, but the fast game with the wooden ball and the hockey stick on the grass was a lot of fun.
Suddenly the ball hit me full force at my ankle. In great pain, I limped to the edge of the field. All joy in the game seemed to have suddenly vanished. At first, it was hard to think a clear thought. However, I vehemently refused to accept a feeling of disappointment and helplessness and mentally rejected the claim of an injury, as I had learned to do in Christian Science. But in the evening, after arriving home, I was not able to put weight on my foot anymore and the pain became unbearable.
Turning to God in prayer, I remembered a statement from Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy writes: “… divine Love cannot be deprived of its manifestation, or object; … joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy; … good can never produce evil; … matter can never produce mind nor life result in death” (p. 304 ). I realized that this divine law of unity between Love and its reflection, man (our real spiritual identity), is always in effect and could not be interrupted at any point. There is nothing outside of God’s allness. Therefore, I could not be separated from Love. I also saw that my joy could not be turned into sorrow because in God’s kingdom there are not two sides: good over here and evil over there, or joy over here and sorrow over there.
I became conscious that good, God, is the only reality and that it suffices to know this and feel it. I didn’t need to work to apply the infinite, omnipresent power of divine Truth to fix “a problem.” I just needed to acknowledge the spiritual fact of my being, yield to the Truth, and trust divine Love to govern and to embrace all His creation.
The pain was still intense, but I decided to go to bed and continue praying. Conscious of my safety in God’s perfect all-power, I fell peacefully asleep.
The next morning, I realized with joy that everything was fine—there was no more pain and no more limping. The healing was complete, and my joy and gratitude were great!
