Shingles healed
From 1986 through 1992 I dealt daily with a case of shingles following a rare case of scarlet fever that my doctor told me I’d contracted during a hospital stay during the birth of my second child. Relapses occurred during that period, and I was using a new drug to fight them. I wasn’t a Christian Scientist at the time, although I was a soloist for a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. I wanted to join a branch church and The Mother Church, and to be free of reliance on medications.
I found that any temper outburst or fear sent me back into the associated pain. As I studied Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and the Bible on a daily basis, my ability to remain peaceful and free of fear of the pain became easier and easier. I also began to wean myself away from the medication and gradually relied solely on prayer.
One of the truths I lived with came from Science and Health: “The divine metaphysics of Christian Science, like the method in mathematics, proves the rule by inversion. For example: There is no pain in Truth, and no truth in pain; no nerve in Mind, and no mind in nerve; no matter in Mind, and no mind in matter; no matter in Life, and no life in matter; no matter in good, and no good in matter” (p. 113). I spent most of my prayer on those first two parts, acknowledging that, as the image and likeness of Truth, I could have no pain because there was no truth in pain.
