No more flu symptoms
All the drug stores were advertising flu shots, and my friends were talking about who was home with the flu. I recognized these as impositions on my thinking—distractions from the fundamental truth that health is spiritual—and did my best to divert my attention. But one evening after a very busy week, I began to feel ill. All the symptoms pointed to this dreaded seasonal illness.
I was alert that evening when images from the drug stores and newscasts came flashing back into my thought. I immediately stopped what I was doing, denied that disease could have any reality in God’s realm of harmony, and began pouring the truth into my thought.
I reviewed what Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, admonishes us to do in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Suffer no claim of sin or of sickness to grow upon the thought. Dismiss it with an abiding conviction that it is illegitimate, because you know that God is no more the author of sickness than He is of sin” (p. 390 ). On the following page, she also writes, “When the body is supposed to say, ‘I am sick,’ never plead guilty” (p. 391 ).
After reviewing several of these admonitions on what to do when the body complains of disease, I began recognizing the truth about myself, which is expressed in Jesus’ teachings: “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48 ). I knew that by understanding more about who and what God is, I could know who and what I am as His expression.
The Bible tells us that “God is love” (I John 4:8 ), so I knew that as Love’s expression I was permeated within and without with harmonious, peaceful, warm, and caring love. God is Spirit (see John 4:24 ), so I am wholly spiritual. God is Truth, so I express all that Truth is—and as Eddy writes, “To Truth there is no error,—all is Truth” (Science and Health, p. 475 ). Truth includes the attributes of health, strength, and wholeness.
In the study of Christian Science we learn that the Bible specifically names or implies seven synonyms for God. In addition to Truth, Love, and Spirit, God is also Life, Mind, Soul, and Principle. Each synonym has its attributes that we naturally express as God’s image and likeness. This is simply who we are—the functioning reflection of the qualities and attributes of God.
As I clearly recognized these truths for myself, mentally reviewing all the synonyms for God, the flu lost its claim in my thinking. The symptoms dissipated, I felt fine, and I can honestly say I haven’t had any similar trouble since! I’m grateful that this healing made me more alert to the importance of rejecting fearful statements or advertisements concerning seasonal or other diseases. The cure came from realizing the unreality of disease as part of God’s pure and perfect kingdom, where we all “live, and move, and have our being” (Acts 17:28 ).
