Moved with joy

When I received a letter of election to membership in The Mother Church from the Christian Science Board of Directors in April 2011, I felt deeply moved by the joy of this news. I had been cherishing the thought of membership since I fell in love with Christian Science in August 2008.

I have been faithful to this prospective “marriage,” in the form of membership in The Mother Church, doing what a responsible spouse does for his/her partner. My faithfulness, commitment, and spirituality were recognized by my branch church in Lusaka, Zambia, when they elected me Second Reader.

Prior to my election, I had decided to apply for Mother Church membership, but there was no Christian Science teacher in Lusaka to countersign my application. Then, to my joy, the teacher to whom I’d applied for Christian Science Primary class instruction came to our church for a Christian Science lecture. It was the first time she had come to Zambia and what a great joy it was for both of us!

Before this, we used to communicate only through phone, SMS [text messages], and e-mails, but there we were, meeting face to face! God is so good. We talked in detail about my Christian Science experience and about my attending class. She also signed my Mother Church application form.

When I went through class in September of 2011, I learned of a “new Jerusalem” and a “new earth.” My teacher told me to ponder and keep what I learned in class to myself for the time being, until I felt my understanding had matured. This is in line with what the Virgin Mary did—keeping quietly in her heart the message delivered to her by the angel Gabriel about the birth of Jesus.

I held on to my teacher’s advice, and I am slowly seeing that spiritual maturity budding. The letter I received announcing my membership in The Mother Church in Boston reminded me of the spiritualized consciousness—that is, the understanding of my spiritual being—which I have gained through Christian Science. I have learned to listen to the voice of Christ, Truth, which always speaks to me loudly, guiding me to see the nothingness of matter. I am blessed to be a member of The Mother Church, for I see and enjoy the fruits of my labor through my study of Christian Science.
