Our biweekly series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science healing

LOST AND FOUND

MY JOURNEY TOWARD the public practice of Christian Science started when I was 20 years old, after a healing that took place when I returned to Australia from a visit to Africa.

Growing up, I attended a Christian Science Sunday School until I was about 16. Several years later I went to England, Europe, and Africa with a friend and took up with a crowd of young people drifting from country to country. At that point I was no longer actively thinking about Christian Science. I traveled about with them for months, soul-searching and looking for something to live my life by. I had not communicated with my parents back in Australia. Concerned, they contacted a Christian Science practitioner, who assured them that I could never be lost from God, divine Mind. My father traveled to Africa in search of me and—through circumstances that could only have been divinely orchestrated—found me within hours of his arrival there.

Returning to Australia, still feeling spiritually adrift, I picked up the family's copy of Science and Health. As I read, I realized this was the truth I had been searching for. I remember being struck by the idea of God as Life, and I saw that this Life operated worldwide and that no one, including me, could be disconnected from it. I loved that book, and I made up my mind to serve God and the Christian Science church all the rest of my life.
