WALKING THE PATH OF ETERNAL LIFE

THE QUESTION of what happens after death has fascinated humankind for millennia. This week's Bible Lesson titled "Probation After Death" not only provides answers to that question, but, more important, it directs our thought to what really satisfies our inner spiritual longings for eternal Life.

Science and Health explains how Jesus' physical appearance to his disciples after his resurrection "revealed unmistakably a probationary and progressive state beyond the grave" (p. 46, citation 12). The good news of this Lesson, however, is not that mortal existence continues after death, reassuring as that may be to those who fear that their existence ends in the grave. Rather, the good news is that the mortal sense of existence is in fact a dream, and that through the Christ we can awaken, right here and right now, into the spiritual understanding of eternal Life in God.

The Golden Text from Proverbs 4:18 shows us the path that leads to such an awakening: "The path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day." The New International Version translates that verse this way: "The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day." As the highest example on earth of someone who trod such a path, Jesus Christ showed through his resurrection and ascension where such a path leads, namely, to "the full light" of eternal Life.
