SOLSTICE
Today, our garden
is snowing leaves.
The gold and orange shapes
lie like rumpled duvets
on an unmade bed.
Each season provides
a spiritual impetus
for healing change.
Soon the transformed limes
will stand watchful—stark and bare,
their lofty branches echoing
the fan-vaulting of an ancient church,
their vivid tracery etched on
the winter sky.
But we know that spring will bring
the promise of a sheltering coat,
and so the eternal round
will come again.
These tall symbols
of the strength of God
embody the eternal law
of timeless renewal—
that rhythmic whole
(the immaculate design and order)
which is our promise—
and the affirmation is now.
—John York
