PRAYERFUL PORTAGES

Last summer I went on a canoeing trip with seven friends, including two trip leaders. The 15-day outing was part of a camp counselor training program. I found myself in new situations every day.

During the trip, our group had to portage canoes from one lake to another. Portaging involves one person carrying the canoe on his shoulders. Our portages ranged from 200-3,700 meters. Combined with a heavy backpack, uncomfortable yoke, and swarms of mosquitoes, they could be extremely grueling.

In our group, I seemed to struggle the most physically with portaging. On the first day I could barely walk 50 meters under the canoe. But because there were two more weeks and many more portages to go, I realized there was no time for aching fatigue—I had to meet this challenge. I was grateful to be with a group of Christian Scientists, who supported turning to God as the answer for any challenge.
