FREED FROM MENTAL AND PHYSICAL 'SNARES'
Originally published in Der Herold der Christian Science
One day I had a guest for lunch. After spending a lovely time together, we decided to finish off the afternoon with a walk along the Elbe River, which is seven minutes from my home. By then it was late in the afternoon, and it was starting to get dark. Lots of leaves covered the path we were walking on.
Suddenly I stumbled and fell down headlong. My foot had gotten caught in a metal wire that I hadn't seen because it was hidden under the leaves. My friend helped me back on my feet. But I found that my leg was extremely painful and bruised, and I couldn't walk easily.
As a Christian Scientist, I am used to praying whenever I am in a difficulty, including physical troubles. Relying on God and His laws of health and harmony has helped me in so many situations. So it was natural for me to turn to God immediately and declare that in His care I was safe. For me, there is no other way.
I affirmed that there were no accidents in God's kingdom, and I thought about the first account of creation in Genesis, where it says, "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:31). And I felt the support of my friend, who was also a Christian Scientist. I knew he was praying, too.
We curtailed our walk. Although I was limping and walking with great difficulty, I managed to drop my friend off at his subway stop. Once home, I sat down and started listening in prayer to know what I needed to understand. These words from a hymn by Mary Baker Eddy came to mind: "Love is our refuge; only with mine eye / Can I behold the snare, the pit, the fall" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 207). I realized it was the "snares" of a limited, material view of myself that wanted to pull me down into the "pit" of pain and discomfort.
Suddenly I remembered a phone conversation that I had had with a family member earlier that day. It hadn't gone very well. I had resented some comments this relative had made that had shown his lack of understanding of my religion. And in my rush to get ready for the arrival of my guest, I had cut our conversation short.
I realized that I hadn't corrected my limited view of my relative and brought healing to my consciousness about that conversation. But now I saw that he was just as much a beloved idea of God as I was, and was equipped to express good qualities that God had given him, such as understanding, tolerance, and love. Then I turned the whole situation over to God and felt completely peaceful and calm.
I slept well that night. In the morning I was completely free of pain. I had no more problems walking. And within a couple of days, all bruises on my leg had vanished.
Healing had come when I recognized both my relative's and my own true identity to be the reflection of Love—spiritual, unharmed, perfect, untouched by accident or disharmony.
I'm deeply grateful for the blessings that I experience through my study of Christian Science.
