Next in our biweekly series on how people have nurtured their public practice of Christian Science.

ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER

GO FOR IT!

INITIALLY, I HAD NOT the slightest inclination or desire to become a Christian Science practitioner. I loved the job I had as a planning and scheduling engineer for a company that built the first manned spacecraft, Project Mercury.

I'd taken class instruction in Christian Science to get more information on how to pray better in order to do my job well and deal with other challenges I had in my life. And this spurred me onward spiritually.

Then one day, a Sunday School pupil of mine called, asking me to pray for his mother, who had just been rushed to the hospital in an emergency. I tried to explain, as lovingly as I could, that I wasn't a Christian Science practitioner. And he replied, "But you said Christian Science could always help us." "That's right," I admitted, "I did say that." (You have to watch what you tell your Sunday School kids!) So begrudgingly, and most hesitatingly, I told him that I would pray. And the mother was healed by the time the ambulance reached the hospital. They examined her and could not find any of the symptoms she had experienced.
