STING OF SCORPION FISH HEALED

When I worked as a scuba diving instructor and dive guide here in southeast Florida, I had a wonderful healing underwater.

I was leading a group of divers on the first dive of the day to a wreck about 80–90 feet below the surface. I planned to stay at the wreck for the first ten minutes and then lead the group to another smaller wreck and a sunken Rolls Royce. As I was watching over the group, I saw that a fellow diver almost put his hand on top of a scorpion fish, which was nestled on the wreck. While I was alerting him about this, I overlooked another scorpion fish, perfectly camouflaged, and got stung by it on my arm. The sting was so powerful that it went right through my wetsuit.

As a scuba instructor, part of my job was to be informed about poisonous fish—and the various symptoms related to their stings—so I could educate students. I knew that scorpion fish stings involve severe pain, swelling at the site of the puncture, and eventually nausea, fainting, seizures, even paralysis.
