THE BIBLE WOMEN ELISABETH MENTIONS

Sarah: She lived 1,900 years before the birth of Jesus and gave birth in 1895 bc , at the age of 90, to Isaac—fulfilling the prophecy made by angel visitors to her husband, Abraham (see Genesis 17–21).

Miriam: Moses' sister and one of only four women prophets in the Holy Bible. After Moses successfully led the children of Israel out of Egypt and through the Red Sea, in 1275 bc , Miriam took her timbrel and led the women in dance and songs of thanksgiving to God (see Exodus 15).

Hannah: Her husband, Elkanah, loved her very much, though Hannah had no children. She prayed to God to give her a son, whom she promised would serve Him. Samuel was born in 1086 bc . He became a great prophet (see I Samuel chapter 1–2).

The Bible quotations included in Elisabeth's story are adapted from chapter 1 of The Gospel of Luke, and are from J. B. Phillips's The New Testament in Modern English.
